Aretaieion Hospital | Saint Nectarios

The final earthly chapter of Saint Nectarios’s life took place at the Aretaieion Hospital in Athens, where he reposed on 8 November 1920.

September–November 1920

Orthodox biographies record that he was brought from Aegina to the hospital during his final illness. He remained there until his repose on 8 November 1920. His body was then taken back to Aegina.

The chapel-room

The Rizarios historical archive explicitly records that the room where Saint Nectarios died is today a small temple/chapel on the hospital’s second floor. This physical survival makes Aretaieion one of the most important documentary pilgrimage locations in Athens connected directly with the Saint.

Miracle tradition

A widely repeated Orthodox tradition concerns another patient in the hospital and Saint Nectarios’s clothing immediately after his repose. On this site the account belongs in the reported miracle tradition category: it is important to the Saint’s devotional history, but is not presented as an independently verified medical case.
